I'm trying to add a new field in content manager, so I'm here:
Home » Administer » Content management » photos

where photo is my own content type, but I can use a pre-existing content type with the same results

I have imagefield module installed and enabled but no matter what, i can't get "images" to appear on the drop down under "Select field type"

I tried reinstalling all the necessary modules (or at least what I think are the necessary modules) Tried to enable permissions liberally even where it doesn't seem to make sense, don't know what else to try. Been trying to make this work for 6 or 7 hours now, and read everything there is to read out there, watched videos on the subject, nothing seems to work. Is there some magic I'm not getting?

Select the "File" type, then choose "Image" as the widget.

It is unfortunate that the O'Reilly "Using Drupal" chapter on making a calendar says to select Image.

Yes it is a bit unfortunate, but such is the nature of Drupal. It changes faster than any print can handle, if following the instructions in the O'Reilly book (and wanting them to line up perfectly), then you should use the source code it was written against from http://usingdrupal.com/source_code.
