Hey guys...

New problem today.. I knew this one was coming though.
I've got a pretty simple categorized page going, and I've made my categories - but they don't seem to actually do anything.
When creating a piece of content, I can tell it where I want it filed, but it doesn't do anything with actually organizing the content or giving me an ability to link to it in any way. In fact I only know where the page is filed under when I edit it. That's the only time anything related to categories comes up.

So - what exactly is the purpose of this?

Taxonomy is what keeps my images in galleries, each gallery is a category and in some cases are nested deeply. It also allows me to have an image in more than one category (say, for example, clows and ballons. With additional modules, you can do lots of things.

Thank you so much Brian - those links were exactly what I needed!
And oddly, I attempted to use taxonomy_theme once before and couldn't get it to work. Now it does. Wierd.

As a side note, I hope Steve or Robert Douglass sees this post. This kind of goes into what I was saying yesterday. Having this sort of list of links would have saved me two weeks worth of work. That may sound extreme, but when you're workin blind....

Anyway, thanks again Brian. :)

cheers,

How did you get yours laid out so nicely?
I've been jacking with this all week and can't seem to get it. If you look here (artistic nudity warning), you can see it's awful. I can't get anything to pad, can't get the description to come up under the thumbnails, and in FF it's really hideous.

ANY little hints you can provide would be really awesome. :)
Thanks!

Try the theme FriendsElectric, I basically hacked that theme to death to make my site. Take note, that theme is pretty complex, so reading through the code a few times is reccomended. The theme on my site (feel free to look at the source) is simpler.

After much brain ache last night I got it all styled nicely... still have issues though. I've hacked box_grey primarily because it already had the image_gallery.tpl.php /template.php started. It helped, but something is not right..
Anyway, great job Brian and thanks for the info. :)

cheers,

It is just for categorisation.

Its like metadata you attach to your nodes to describe/categorise them.

Then you can use various modules to actually DO stuff with that metadata. It's the modules that actually DO stuff, and it's really up to you to choose the modules you want and how to configure them.

The core taxonomy module does give you listings though. If you click on a category you'll see a list of nodes tagged with that category.

With all the confusion between Drupal newbies and taxonomy, I think it would be really worth while to have this kind of information posted somewhere up front. And then have something like a "related links" with the taxonomy module itself that leads to the above links that Brian gave (and anything else that might be useful).

And it doesn't help that while Drupal handbooks keep calling taxonomy "taxonomy", it's listed in the drupal menu as "category". At least, this was a major source of my confusion for a long time.

There you go, making me look like an idiot. I would have included that in my post as well.

Your links were good too. You linked to tools to leverage the module, I linked to some docs. :)

It's such a broad category. Many people also don't realy use taxonomy/categories except those built into forums or image modules.

I've often wished for a 'find what I want link' myself.

The history is usability folks complained that taxonomy was to complex a word and wanted the 'more friendly' word categories instead.

and suurree :P
