Maybe this is a bug or maybe I'm confused. If I go to create a new product, I don't have a button to indicate whether it is an auction item. Only whether or not it is shippable. However, if I go to auction settings and turn on the "select button by default" setting... then the button appears. With that setting off, though, the button is invisible.

By "invisible," do you just mean that the "Auction settings" fieldset is collapsed? It should be in the "Product settings" fieldset. It might be hard to see if you're not looking closely.
