Any help supporting this issue/bug? Is there a way of getting filefield to upload straight away, bypassing the need to submit & save the form?

I don't use or support content profile module so this will need to be fixed in the issue you mentioned. If changes turn out to be necessary to support content profile, I'd be happy to make those adjustments to FileField, but it'll need to be provided as a patch. Please transfer over the existing issue if needed, rather than making multiple issues for the same problem.
