When trying to install this module, drupal_set_message told me that it is not possible to install it without the PEAR library. Could be my setup (Acquia Damp Stack), but if this is actually true it would be nice to have a little note on the project page.

it is definitely interesting, because I don't know of a PEAR library requirement. Are you sure it was this module?

The l10n_server package requires PEAR, as is nicely stated in the documentation on Drupal.org:

Your PHP installation should have the PEAR Archive_Tar package installed
