Leftside widget not showing up

I can't get the widget that (I think) should appear on the left side of the 'scoop' node. I've checked 'scoop' as the node type and if I check the boxes for 'Link sections' then the small voting up/down shows up, but no matter what settings I try, I can't get the full widget to show up on the left side as seen on various sites.

I'm currently using the pixture_reloaded theme. I've also checked firebug and it doesn't appear to be placing any code for the widget at all on the page. The only time widget code is placed is when the 'link section is placed' and that code is for only that portion (not the left widget).
