Is there anything I can do to get rid of the "/content" from my website? I just think it's annoying having this extra sub-domain whenever I create something. I realize that certain elements like the forum and contact are under the www.mydomainname.com/"x" but is there a way for everything else to mimic this as well?

You can edit the paths that are created at admin/build/path/pathauto.
