i saw a lot of posts about teaser issues with galleria, mostly with imagefield+galleria. however, i am using upload+galleria, and i wonder what to change to have the first attached image displayed in teaser mode along with the description (body) field.

You'd have to use the standard theme system to do this - a template file and some function calls to theme('image').

I fully support maxigas request.
Additionally I suggest to add same feature, when commenting galleria node.
I got "Gallerias only display when viewing a node by itself on the page" error when promote galleria to main page or try to add comments to galleria node. It is not natural behavior.
In this cases quite enough to show just first picture with teaser text instead all gallery or error message.
I am sure this code must be in module, but not in theme files.
May be you have some reasons for such behavior?
Also may be useful checkbox "Show 1st picture in teaser" in galleria module administer interface...
With this improvements great galleria module will come more user friendly and convenient.
