I am definitely new at this stuff, but I've been able to futz my way around Drupal so far without too many issues. But now I have two continuing problems that are starting to become critical because my website usage is suddenly growing quickly and these issues are making life difficult for me and my users.
http://www.ubuntuwebservers.com
1. cron is not working anymore. For a week or two after installing Drupal cron appeared to work fine and updated my search results so people could do searches on my site. Now it has just stopped working. With all the new content on my site since it was last successfully run, people are having a helluva time finding stuff, and that's not good. I posted details about my setup in a previous posting, but got no results:
(is there something else I can do to index my site if I can't get cron to work?)
2. I cannot for the life of me get email working. There's something fundamental that I'm missing, I'm sure of it. I currently have the website installed on my own Linux server in my home office using a cable internet connection. Other sites on the server (I'm running virtual hosting) seem to work fine with email, but not Drupal. There was about 1 day when I accidentally got it working, but then it just stopped again. It's really frustrating me. What can I do to make my Drupal installation use my normal email service (like vincedee@comcast.net) instead of whatever it's trying to do right now (which I suspect is trying to use the email server on my web server machine)?
I have to get these two problems resolved before my website gets many more people on it. Already I've missed a couple of emails and the logs show that people are conducting searches with no or few results showing.
I would appreciate help in solving these issues.

As for the Cron problem
I have a few questions for you.Are you able to manually trigger a reindex by browsing to http://www.ubuntuwebservers.com/cron.php? As I understand it all the cron job in Linux does is access that page to trigger the reindex, etc.
If the above works then can you post your crontab entry? Maybe something got changed or mixed up? If you have other cron jobs defined, are they running fine?
I posted the above before reading your other post. What about your server logs for the site? Is there anything out of the ordinary in your error log? You might also try increasing the timeout or decreasing the number of items to reindex.
I also read the other post
I also read the other post after replying...
I would check the php timeout. Here is another long thread about setting up your cron job: http://drupal.org/node/1181

You can run cron
You can run cron manually:
Just visit: http://www.example.com/cron.php
Nothing gets printed out, but if you check: http://www.example.com/admin/
there should be a log stating that cron was run successfully.
You need to find if your script is not working (cron.php) or cron is not setup/running. You can view your crontab with
If you server does not run cron you can always try the poormanscron under modules. (I have not tried it).
I have not tried to configure drupal to use a SMTP server for email, but I bet someone has.

It worked
The cron fixes the re indexing problem that I have and the search is working very good
thanks
The cron problem was fixed
Thanks to KarenS, who had the suggestion of disabling installed modules until cron runs properly. It turns out that the dba module was interrupting cron.
Here is the thread:

I'm still trying to figure out the email issue though.

If you receive any error messages, feel free to post them...
Not exactly sure about the email problem, but you might want to take a look at the SMTP module.

Tips for posting to the forums.
When your problem is solved, please post a follow-up to the thread you started.
I'm glad you mentioned the SMTP program
I actually tried it already this afternoon. It worked, but it caused some kind of strange issue with localization. I'm creating a separate post to ask for help on that issue.

Cron run completed but search doesn't work
I've tried with two different ways but the site is not indexed:
1) Clean up two tables: search_index and search_total. Run cron.php manually
2) Clean up two tables above, disable almost modules but required modules and tehn run cron.php manually.
For both cases, I checked the log and saw that the indexing status is 100% indexed. However, the two tables above are still empty after running cron.php. Therefore, the search did not work as expected.
One more thing that the site had been indexed some time in the past and the search also worked well at that time. This issue only occurs since last month.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
MeoLe
