It was actually a reasonably good post and may have been useful to be slotted in somewhere.

his spin on the subject was pretty good with the car analogy being quite well done.
It seems to me that he was most likely trying to do something positive at that time but some lost souls here were out to get him OR so enraged they lost their heads.
My opinion....I only just noticed reep a day or so ago and had been watching the threads he was in develop...or degenerate whichever way you like to see it.
I think that if you (all forum users) cannot say something to a new users question that is close to 100% an attempt at an answer then you should resist all temptation to answer.
Most definitely comments or answers should be totally free of any percieved snideness or rudeness.
At present there is more than a hint of that for sure.
If you picture it from the perspective of the new user asking their first few questions and remember that they have probably been reading quite a few threads here prior to asking those questions. They know they may be 'flamed'.
Several posters here recently have prefaced their questions like "Please dont flame me but I...." etc.
There has to be a hint in that.
Again....only my opinion.

It all depends on style. I dont think anybody would consider entering a pub where you've never been before and starting to piss of the regulars...
Asking questions is fine of course, but if your style is sub par, you should go elsewhere lest the bouncers get you out of the door.

Clearly, it's difficult for comments or answers to be free of any percieved snideness or rudeness when the percept happens at the reader's end. Wired had a tiny article on the secret cause of flamewars, but to my surprise I found a better discussion on this interesting subject at Slashdot.
As indicated in those articles, to keep the discussions and the community productive (and happy) it's best to abide by this tip for posting to the forums:
and to try to be as supportive as possible (to certain limits of course...)
