Slashdot-styled comments

http://drupal.org/node/229158 After reading this thread and discovering it has been deprecated, I was hoping someone had worked on something similar. I'm running a news website with a high volume of comments, but I'd prefer users moderate the comments like Slashdot allows. Is there anyone out there that has worked on something similar or finds this issue appealing in some way? I'd appreciate any feedback.
