With the new client side database storage features of Safari and FF shouldn't it be possible to drop the dependency on Google Gears?

This is sort of a duplicate of #509682: Firefox 3.5 Mac compatibility issue? - there is no dependency on Google Gears. Where client side storage is available it is used. You don't need Gears on newer versions of Safari to use Cobalt. Firefox doesn't have that kind of client side storage yet - it only has a simpler form which can't be used for the search functionality that Cobalt uses.
