6.x-1.x-dev shows up as okay in the status report, but Drupal reports that the module is out-of-date if I download the 6.x-2.x-dev version.

do you have the July 25th dev release or the Aug 3 one? There was an update released early this morning so you may be, in fact, slightly out of date. There's no real reason to stay totally updated with the devs though unless you are having an issue and want to see if it's fixed in the latest dev.

I kept downloading the August 3rd release, but only the 6.x-1.x development version checked out with the status report. I'll try again...

The 8/3 release looks fine for me, and shows up-to-date for me locally. There should be a new dev rolling tonight, let me know if it's still causing you issues.

I'm guessing this was a quirk of that particular release.
