My site keeps going down because of a syntex error in index.php.

It says it adds a > on a line number.

I have tried to make the index.php file a read only
but that does not work.

Please help.

The most like cause is code add by a virus to the end of index.php. If you edit index.php it should be obvious.

I think your right. I read something about a snake getting
in through the ftp site and adding code to this file.
I will update from drupal 5.14 to Drupal 5.19.

One of my test sites had a login window. I closed
it and things look alot better.
