Granting Users a role when they join a group

I am running groups and then had used the OG Promote Module to give the group members subscriber access. It worked when I installed it, but since then it seems like some conflict has crept up or something changed with some site updates because now the role is not being applied to group members.

I tried uninstalling the og promote for the og default roles module, but neither one successfully hand off the role to my group members.

How can I track this down, find out what is going and repair it? I've wasted about 10+ hours now on this. Please help.
