I've installed it and am applying it to a title field. I'm using it with the countdown function.
Working great so far.
See my feature request which desires the counter to go into negative numbers and throw an error on submit if the field is too long:

I just used this module for a old project, but It's kind of cool functionality, but the module could be written much better,
even its better on d6--2.
