In documenting how to add new filters (since I had added several lately), I identified several places where some abstraction would help a lot in being able to define a filter. It is do-able.

The patch is very large and uses some features that I don't think are available in 5.x, so back-porting this would be very difficult. As a result, I would like to freeze the 5.x branch. That would happen soon anyway because Drupal 7 is about to go into code freeze (Sep. 1) and I would like to start getting ready for D7.

In private email, introfini has agreed to freeze 5.x. Without significant comments to the contrary, this will happen in the next few days.
