Faulty Profile Search with Views

This may be a very obvious questions but how do I display a View designed to search Profile fields, ala ProfileSearch, so that when I insert it into a panel it does not automatically display to whole data set??

What I really want is to have the search bar (filter) on the front page in a Panel and have it then display the list on a new page, with the search bar (filter) at the top of the page to then search again if needed.

What I have managed to do is produce a view that does the search as needed and put it on the front page. however, as mentioned, it automatically comes out with a full list of all the data and when I find that when I type in a search word that is not in the data the whole search filter disapears??

this is very confusing, I cannot seam to find and solid guide to setting this up?
