wrt: #546344: Add config option to restrict by subcollection

If we need to address different features for different Google Mini (MID and M2) and potentially GSA versions I suggest to add a something like a select box into the admin area to specify the Mini/GSA version so that features can be enabled and disabled specific to that version.

I thought a more general issue for discussion could be useful for this issue.

It's certainly the case that features will change between different versions of the GSA hardware. An example I've seen is the maximum meta tag content that can be indexed -- that changed in the online documentation between the time I first looked at it, and now.

Does Google document these configuration and feature variations anywhere? (Or could we request them?)

I like the idea of being able to pre-configure the module with the select list, but also being able to over-ride individual settings if your version is not explicitly catered for.

One possible approach would be a configuration file which defined mappings between features and GSA versions. A simple associative array could suffice for the syntax. People could then submit patches to the config file if the version of the GSA that they purchased had a differing configuration. For things like maximum values, people could update the available pre-set configurations without any extra code being required elsewhere.

The best place to find out about feature variations seem to be the release notes within the update pages.

There is a "New and Changed Features" section for most versions (but not for all). A compilation of these sections for any of the GSA versions should be fairly comprehensive and seems to be the best we can get from Google at the moment. I posted this as an issue on the GSA support forum.

The problem with the update pages is that I can only view the release notes for the Google Mini (M2) version I registered. I can't view MID or GSA release notes. To compile a comprehensive list we either need help from someone who registered all Google Mini/GSA versions or we need to share the release notes for the version we have access to.

I'm happy to post the release notes for the M2 versions here though I'm not sure if this breaches any copyright. I couldn't find any obvious statement on https://support.google.com/enterprise about this but I guess since Google doesn't make the release notes publicly available it might not want us to do so either.
