I think it would be useful to have a "Powered By Drupal" line in the footer of templates, with a link to this site.
Advantages:
- Give Drupal developers the credit they deserve.
- Put Drupal into the hands of more users, by making it easy for visitors to sites using Drupal to find www.drupal.org
- Grow the Drupal developer community by raising Drupal's profile.
All of the above are advantages, I can't think of any disadvantages, as long as:
- Option to switch on and off the "Powered By Drupal" line in Configuration is easy for Admins
- It's made very clear that the line is completely optional, there is no requirement to keep it.
- The style of the line can be customised to the look of the rest of the template.
In the long term this would not only be good for Drupal, but also for it's users, who will benefit from the growth of the user/developer Drupal community.

tamarian commentedI was about to make the same suggestion, but found this was already raise since January 2004.
I do find it annoying when some FOSS online tools force their logo and "powered by" to be placed in the footer, with HTML comments such as "You may not remove this line".... or even refusing support to sites that remove such footers. So I find quite refreshing that Drupal goes the other extreme.
However, placing a "Powered by Drupal" link in the footer by default, and adding an HTML comment such as "Spread the word about Drupal, but feel free to remove this link if you must", or any words to this effect, that make it clear it is optional.
Drupal currently places the burden on users to go find the right size logo/button and add the HTML into each theme, or find the right place in the admin menu to be able to have the link.

Richard Archer commentedMoving this out of the Feature module to somewhere more relevant where it might get more attention.

elv commentedMay an optional block in Drupal core do the job?
It could also be a tiny contrib module.
Or it could be done in themes (less flexible, not always available)
What do you think?

cosmicdreams commentedWow, 2005. Apparently this issue didn't get the attention it deserved. Yet, today in my vanilla drupal 6 install I do see a block named powered by drupal turned on by default. Marking as closed.
