Er. What I mean by the above:

I have a content type on which the default settings for "post to front page" and "published" are off. When I create one of these nodes via WLW, the node is created with the "published" box checked.

there are two buttons in Windows Live Writer

Publish
Posts the post to the site and published.
Save Draft
Posts the post to the site and leaves it unpublished.
