Pt-br translation environment in Localize.drupal.org

Project:Drupal.org webmasters

Issue Summary

Hi,
As the maintainer from the pt-br translation team, I would like you to create the translation environment to the brazilian portuguese team in localize.drupal.org.

We can handle the migration of the strings (and maybe suggestions) ourselves.

My username is wundo (d.o uid 25523, l.d.o uid 128).

Thank you,
Fabiano Sant'Ana

Your site seems to have 11 thousand suggestions. How do you plan to migrate those?

#3

Also, looks like we'd need to somehow rectify two people running two l10n_servers for the same language now trying to migrate to localize.drupal.org. Please see #560408: Brazilian Portuguese.

Gábor,
Most of those suggestions are for D6 and where either approved and are in the .po file or were rejected and we don't need to migrate them.
We only have ~200 hundred suggestions to D7, and we can deal with these pretty easily.

Massa forked our project some time ago because he felt that a moderated translation system, i.e., an l10n server where the someone reviews the suggestions is too restrictive to new comers. But the fact that when you don't force the review workflow the quality of the translation goes down, as the people tend mistranslate many items and some just ignore the translation guidelines.

At that time, we did a lot of effort trying to merge the work and the team, but we didn't succeed and it was a lot of time wasted.

Massa is welcome to contribute, as he has always been, but we would like to keep our own approval team as it is right now.

@wundo: your site seems to say "12677 suggestions awaiting approval". How does that relate to the numbers you are communicating here? "~200 hundred" I'm not totally getting.

Clarifying wundo's comments

There are four sources of suggestions at l10n.drupaleiros.com:

- Leftovers from D5 (not D6) translation. D5 translation was done and published outside the translation server. The complete D5 core translation was imported as suggestions, but they were never approved, since we were not working in D5 core translation anymore. That makes a total of 1406 orphan strings that can be deleted immediatly.

- Imports from traducao.drupal-br.org. This fork of the translation server has a major issue: it has no suggestion approving workflow, which means the translation from it is not revised at all and is sometimes of very poor quality. (I've even found once some strings translated into hungarian in the translation from traducao.drupal-br.org) So, all the content translated there was imported as suggestions in l10n.drupaleiros.com, to be revised later. All these suggestions can be reimported into l.d.o, since there's the pot file from traducao-br.
(BTW: please, please, please, don't import content from t.d-br.o as approved translations. It has to be imported as suggestions)

- Imports from modules that were translated directly in the old pot/CVS method. They're are imported as suggestions, since they may be not revised and are already available somewhere else. These suggestions can be easily reimported using

- Individual suggestions that are not yet approved and not available somewhere else. The solution here will be left them in l10n.drupaleiros.com for a while and have a taskforce to approve them all as soon as possible. When it's ready, it will be reimported into l.d.o. This need not to delay the creation of a l.d.o home for Brazilian Portuguese, since the old site would be closed for new suggestions and available only to the revision process.

So, I don't see any impediment to creating Brazilian Portuguese translation right now. We can populate it quickly without much impact to previous work on translation.

Some statistics from #7.

I've just deleted orphan strings from D5. There are now 10901 suggestions in l10.drupaleiros.com.

6976 of them are imported strings from traducao.drupal-br.org. Those can be easily reimported using a pot file.

This leaves us with 3925 suggestions.

1653 of those are a second suggestion for strings that has already an approved translation. Importing of those is not urgent and most of those suggestions are not likely to be approved. The one that are worth using can be approved separately and manually imported into l.d.o.

Now there are 2272 suggestions left.

Of them, ~1700 are most likely imported by myself and other users.

So , there're more or less 400~600 real suggestions.

My proposed strategy is the following:

- close l10n.d.c right now and open l.d.o/pt-br
- import approved translations from l10n.d.c into l.d.o as approved translations
- import suggestions from everywhere (including t.d-br.o and CVS) as suggestions in l.d.o.
- get a copy of l10n.d.c for revision only, deleting everything but those last 400~600 suggestions
- approve suggestions in l10n.d.c and import them into l.d.o as approved translations

Ok, given

- your clear vision and activity
- your willingness to integrate data from http://traducao.drupal-br.org
- that your server was listed as a definitive source at http://drupal.org/project/l10n_server

I've created the team at http://localize.drupal.org/languages/pt-br

Please expect that there might be bumps in the service. You are among the beta-tester of this live instance. Thanks for helping out and please report issues as you find them! Your team members can now join and help import existing translations and work on more translations.

Also note that I've set this up so that it uses a controlled model (that group admins moderate translations). If you'd rather work in an open model (that everyone can directly submit translations), that is up to you and you can edit your group node to reconfigure anytime.

Consequently, removed the team's listing on http://drupal.org/project/l10n_server

Welcome on board!
