I have been reading about Drupal's taxonomies features. As an information scientist, I like it. But, honestly, I'm not in the mood to write or develop a taxonomy for my site, when I am sure that others have done better work already. The Drupal docs talk of XML import features, so I am wondering whether anyone has a repository of Drupal XML taxonomy files that's available for downloading and tweaking?
TIA,
David

Start with
schemaweb http://www.schemaweb.info/
and
wordnet http://www.semanticweb.org/library/
for nice big lists of all things.
I don't know about their compatability (yet) with taxonomy_xml or other import methods.
I'm working (with reference to taxonomy_xml) on proper RDF import-export methods.
Recently I imported big thesauri from
these government-defined lists and that worked nicely. RDF is the way to go (those sources were just CSV, but I could parse them OK, eventually).

Thanks
Thanks for the ideas. WordNet I've known for a while--it's 10 megs, and a little more (okay, a LOT more!) than I was looking for. SchemaWeb looks interesting. I was hoping that the Drupal community would have smaller, more focused taxonomies more appropriate for website use.
XML Taxonomies for Import?
Interesting sites!
Any suggestions on XML Taxonomy files for the following:
- Location (Region. Country, State/Province, City, Zipcode/Postal Code)
- Art
Apache is bandwidth limited, PHP is CPU limited, and MySQL is memory limited.

yes it would be a great help to be able to pull in reliable location taxonomy information.

Location taxonomies
The best overall source that I know of is the International Standards Organisation's 3166 list - see http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/index.html for details. I think the United Nations may also maintain a similar list. And if anybody finds a good way of importing them, please let me know...
