Image description field does not show on the "add node" form

I have a simple node type that has a single value imagefield in it. When I am trying to create/add a new node of that type, I get only the image upload field displayed. The description field is missing (it is enabled in the field configuration)!

It is interesting because the description field is there when I try to EDIT the node. It only does now show up on the new node form.
