upgrade from D5 to D6 completely broke Menu Trails

Description
I've updated a site from D5 to D6 (along with all of the modules including Menu Trails) and Menu Trails now seems completely DOA. It's activated and I've configured it on the Menus > Trails page to work with two of my node types but when I load any specific nodes the module appears to do absolutely nothing now...no active Primary link or child menu links. Tried it with both my custom theme and with Garland and it makes no difference. Any thoughts or suggestions on what could be wrong or what I'm missing? Thanks
