Is there a way to add a node count to book navigation?

I basically would like to show how many pages are in each book.

I know how to get a node count for taxonomy terms but that doesn't help in the case of a book.

I'll bring this back from the dead. I would like to know the answer to this one as well. Every example of count ive seen use taxonomy terms. Tried the advanced book module, but it doesnt do it either. Something really simple you see in basically every wordpress site is categories with number of posts in each category...would be cool to know how to do this for books.
