When I activate this module I get access denied messages thrown at me - the first one happening on the module activation page. From then on they happen at login and sporadically when clicking through links.

I got this error too. It took me ages to figure out it was this module causing it.

For a solution try the 'me aliases' module: http://drupal.org/project/me
It worked great for me.
