Quick question for the experienced users here at the forums...
I have been developing a drupal site for my job and I have been going hard at getting what I want for the site.
The site will include a lot of social networking aspects and so far I have been doing well with this.
My previous sites & experience lies with joomla development and I wanted to ask a question...
I was looking at the JoomlaSite the other day and I found this: http://www.jomsocial.com/
Basically a commercial plugin for Joomla that has a lot of the cool aspects of facebook.
Is there anything that this plugin does for joomla that we cannot do with Drupal?
It looks like, organic groups, CCK, wall posts, comments, private messaging, more...
Check it all out here: http://www.jomsocial.com/overview.html
I am just wondering what everybody thinks of this type of plugin.
Is there any reason why drupal would be inferior to the abilities of this plugin?
Is there something that this would do for us that we could not do for ourselves?
Comments
also...
if anybody knows of a drupal site that has stuff like the the above plugin... that would be good to know.
Linux is apparently using joomla now: check it out at www.linux.com
drupal
http://www.linuxfoundation.org is using drupal thou ...
also I think there is no such plugin yet .. but with some tinkering you can glue organic groups and cck and views to do the job
update : I remembered this article about building a twitter clone with drupal, hope it helps you
http://www.doitwithdrupal.com/2008/sessions/how-we-built-twitter-drupal
trying to get my hands around it...
Thanks for responding.
I have been trying to piece this together to make a good comparision between the options...
I have developed for Joomla but the limitations of the software would infuriate me. (community builder, crap plugins)
Recently I started working and developing with drupal and i am thinking that all of this is possible on both systems.
However we all know that drupal code far exceeds joomla code & documentation...
Looking at both sides I see...
Drupal:
Organic groups in Drupal covers us for the groups.
Profile pages are included. We can add what we want..
The CCK is awesome.
Private Messaging is there.
Video & Picture Gallery is there.
Comments & Blogs are there.
Views gives more freedom then joomla.
Can integrate facebook.
Can integrate twitter.
FriendList is good for the buddy system.
Customize able user fields are there...
The only thing not there is the activity stream... but you just showed me how to do that with drupal....
Joomla:
Jomsocial gives you all the features in 1 package. ***HAVE To BUY***
I think the most important question we have to ask is this...
How does it scale? Is there any documentation on performance and scalability from the dev? (I would guess no, based on the vague responses to questions like this at the jomsocial forum.) Has anyone run tests or simply analyzed their logs to determine baseline numbers for server resource consumption relative to traffic? What are the optimal server configurations if you anticipate high traffic or simply want to lay a good foundation for growth? Is there support for multiple databases, multiple db users, etc.???
In the long run... I made the switch to drupal because the code is better, it is vastly more scalable and versatile.
I came across Jomsocial and was a little jealous that they came out with this component... but I see that we can do it with drupal
Plus you dont have to fork over 150 bucks to get the same features on drupal. Real developers have no problem piecing it together.
I think that you will see a lot of sites popping up with the jomsocial plugin.
I dont think it matters that we dont have a comprehensive module like joomla does, since we can "glue" it together like you said.
My gut tells me that going with jomsocial is going to be more of the same from joomla and would again hit a wall at a certain point.
I am interested in hearing what others think as well...
Drupal can... but
The usual answer is that, yes, Drupal can do all those things. And it can. It has modules for all sorts of social networking needs. But it doesn't have them all packaged together into something you can just install and have an instant site. Building a social networking site in Drupal is hard work. You'll need 50+ modules and you'll need to configure them all and make sure they're all working together. And, even then, there's some niggling problems such as no consistancy in UI for the end user for things such as subscriptions and privacy.
So it all comes down to how much work you want to put into it. If you're happy with what that Joomla module gives you out of the box, go for it. If you want to do your own thing and make your own distinct site, Drupal has you covered. Just remember, it's going to hand you a box of Legos, not an assembled site.

Thanks for bringing it
Thanks for bringing it up!
I'm a n00b so i can't really help you with the question, but add a server/group/user refinable (permission-based?) aggregation system to your modules-list: perhaps the wheel wouldn't be reinvented, but decentralized networking an accessible reality :)
I remember when i first fibbled arround drupal5, one of my first thoughts was: "I could make a myspace with this..."
edit.... hehe.... 2009 :)
