It's complicated for me to ask this question because I'm not sure what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I'm trying to find out how to change the icon for my site that is next to the URL in Firefox for various sites like Drupal.org and the New York Times. The icon also shows up on tabbed pages in Firefox.

Thanks,

ahijado

That's your favicon.ico file. You can find out more about creating your own here:
http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/

and lots of other places if you search for 'favicon'.

It's called the Favicon. The favicon.ico is located in the root dir for your site.
Read more about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon

To make the favicon show up in IE6, you need to add the site to your favourites, close the browser, then re-open and visit the bookmarked site. What a pain :)
