It comes up fairly regularly that active contributors in the core queue want to be able to post screenshots - you can upload an image file, but not use Only local images are allowed. tags. Since everyone can edit docs pages now, there's usually very little need to have the documentation role, so handing that out liberally like we used to isn't really the done thing, but it just so happens that the docs format would be useful for the issue queue as well. While some people might say 'just upload the image and let people click on it' it's not a good workflow for side-by-side comparisons of images, or for reviewing screenshots - where you'd have to do that with a couple of tabs open and click between them.

So, I think rather than abusing the docs role, we should either add a new one which just allows access to the docs format, or rename it to something more generic.

I agree with catch. And I would certainly apply for that role because I am one of those contributors who would like to have the possibility to provide previews for his images to facilitate the reviews of his patches ;)

What about automatically tagging images? So automatically putting any image thats uploaded in between < img >. I discussed this at Drupalcon nobody seemed to find very hard issues against it.

as work is currently underway to include images, I highly doubt we'll be making a new role for this. Marking as won't fix.
