Installed CCK and dont get any create content or menu items

I have created a completely new Drupal installation on a XAMPP setup, version 1.7.1 by the way becaus e the latest version throws up errors.

Only the default modules enabled and the only download is the latest CCK version. All seems to install ok with no errors etc.

But, for some reason I dont get the menu options to create a new type, nor do I get the the extra tabs when I created an ordinary page or a story. I have cleared the cache and tried the same setup on a Dell (XP SP2) and Toshiba (Vista SP1) laptops and get the same results.

Anyone any ideas what I have done wrong ?
