This seems like it provides default variables, right? If so, I'd love to just have this as a patch to the omniture module rather than as a separate module.

Is there any good reason to keep this as a separate module?

No. The modules integrates with the node edit form and lets the user create Omniture parameters for each node differently.

Have you tried the module out yet?

I've checked out this module very briefly.

It allows you to put a bunch of omniture fields in the nodes edit forms.

I've attached a couple screenshots. One of the content type edit form, and one of the node edit form.
