Unlikely as this seems to me, I am getting an error (see below) whenever I try to use a Webform form on my site when its "E-mail to" field specifies recipient.org - when the "E-mail to" field specifies recipient.com, it works fine.

The error message: Unable to send e-mail. Please contact the site administrator if the problem persists.

It does not seem to matter whether the address I specify is valid or not, just whether it's .org or .com. Thank you for any help.

I doubt this is a Webform-specific problem. It probably has to do with your server configuration of e-mail. Webform doesn't do anything out-of-ordinary when sending e-mails that would prevent certain addresses from getting mail.
