With Drupal 6 it's possible to set fine-grained access permissions for any node through the node access hooks. As far as I can tell, there's no option for similar fine-grained permissions when it comes to accessing user profiles. It would be great if this could be added for Drupal 7.

I've raised a similar point for Drupal 6 at http://drupal.org/node/548230 and started a discussion on how we can hack together some kind of quick solution at http://drupal.org/node/546188, but it would be good to get some feedback from someone who knows user.module. Is there a reason why there's no access system for profiles?
