Multi-country with multi-language site

At the moment we are looking to port over a website to Drupal that has content dependant on country plus language selected by the user.

Good example would be the Apple site, when you go to their .com home page you will see that there are a bunch of countries you can select from and some countries are there twice. Like Switzerland, which has the French and German version.

I have spent a bunch of time researching how this could be achieved in Drupal and although have found several people looking for an answer there still have been no solutions as of yet.

It appears that a module was developed to deal with this ( http://drupal.org/project/country_code ) but then it was halted due to conflicts with Drupal core. I don't understand the ins and outs of why exactly as am new to Drupal.

My questions is:

Is there a way this can be achieved in Drupal with the multi-language tools that are currently available?

Or would one be better to look into the country_code module and see how much of it can be reused and taken forward to a new module that would work?

Thank You.

Still looking for an answer

Just in case someone who knows the answer stumbles across this.
