I'm under the impression this is mostly used by administrators, but I thought it would be cool
to use as a regular navigation. Is it OK , ie "good practice" to use this on a live site?

I guess you either tried and did not like it or did not bother since you did not get an answer... 8-)

Anyway, since you can select any one menu, yes, it can be used for any navigation of your site. And you can place it anywhere you want using a CSS name.
