Closed - ping.fm module for hooking into content creation

We are looking to create a module that will allow us to send headlines through the ping.fm service. What we want to do is that when we publish content of a certain content type it sends the headline and a link to the story through to our ping.fm account.

Some twists:

We have our own url shortening service (tiny url clone, basically). We can help you implement this.. it is basically a curl() call and 4-5 lines of PHP. no big deal.
We make extensive use of workflow and triggers. We only want the ping.fm broadcast to happen once the story is published. Cron makes sense to us, but we're open to other ideas. A trigger could also work.

In the content type, we'd like a "send to ping.fm yes/no?" radio button. it would be good if this option was compatible with the vertical tabs module as we use that to organize our create content/edit content page.

It is completely ok if the options for this module are set in the module php file. I doubt we need to spend the time on a fancy administration interface, and we can't think of what we'd need to administer short of our ping.fm credentials/api interface stuff.

Edit: Suro Soltuions was able to do this for us fast and good. We looked at the ping.fm module, but it didn't quite do what we were after... we could have modified it to be what we wanted without much headache, but there was no time. Otherwise, thanks very much though Rob Loach, you rock. :)
