I looked through the issues and find it odd that nobody else mentioned this so I think that maybe something I've done is wrong but here is what I see:
When a user subscribes to content by pressing save, the page reloads but there is no confirmation that the user has subscribed except that the checkbox is checked after the page reloads. Shouldn't there be a confirmation of some sort?

Yes, maybe there should be a confirmation, but you're the first to notice its absence, so the need doesn't seem to be all that great.

No. Feel free to post patches for D5 and D6 (based on the current -dev versions).
