We only use the filter module. But it looks like multiple tables are created just by enabling the api and the filter module. I wonder if there's a way to make the filer module a bit less heavy?

The core API's processing, whether for filter or any other use, puts the item into the database in the places where it should go. Revamping that is not on the horizon. Thanks for the good thought though. It definitely makes sense.
