Can't get vote up alternative to show

In a regular node (not templated) I can get the +/- to show but not the alternative +. I don't really understand the directions in the readme file if someone may elaborate a bit please.
If I look in the HTML, there's no code showing.

I have the node type selected for activating the widget
Alternative +1 vote style
Vote widget display on teasers and full page
Display of vote points disabled.

I haven't gotten past this part so I doubt the comment settings would be helpful.

My node type is node-user_video.tpl.php and the template iteself was working. I shut it off to see if I can get the default to display.

I would also like to make sure once I get that working (base node template) that I can insert the widget in to my template.
