Can you explain how the whole downline / upline thing works. Specifically:

1) How is a relationship created? I think I read somewhere that the person has to sign up as an affiliate while using another person's affiliate link.

2) How do you manually add a downline / upline relationship? From what I can tell, there is no administrator interface for this and it has to be done through MySQL.

3) Is there a way to block the downline / upline report from showing if the person is only a top level affiliate?

Yes! I agree. This is very confusing and needs better documentation in the module interface.

Have you not seen any MLM systems?

Affiliate system work the same way, you refer someone and they refer other people and they can refer other people, you earn commission on not just the people you refer, but on the sales that your referals page this is your "downline" (people under you).

To find out who is also making money off your sales you would look at your upline.
