Is there a "Latest News" module out there to display just the headlines of the latest stories, say, on the homepage? I was thinking something along the lines of putting the block below the content of the homepage (index, not news).
Or is there a tutorial on how to set it up in views? I have only come across one and it was how to create it within the same page.

You can use views to make
You can use views to make page and/or block displays. The view easy, you want one that shows fields, add the "Node: Title" field and a filter on "Node: Type" set to the appropriate type(s).
