Hello everyone. I'm in a bit of a jam because I would love to use ctools but can't because of an error. I'm fairly new at this so please bear with me. It might be something very simple, but I have no idea. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out. Please view below and thank you in advance.

1. Visit the Modules page, then try again. This sometimes resets things.

2. If not, go back and deactivate Ctools. Uninstall it (using the uninstall tab) Then reactivate it. Did that work?

3. No? Delete the folder and reinstall it on your server. Reactivate. All good?

4. Use phpMyAdmin or another tool and check the System table. Find the file location for ctools. see if it matches where YOU think it is.

If none of those identifies or fixes the problem, then we'll have to try something else....

Thank you so much for taking the time out to help me. I did as instructed and I'm still getting the same error msg. Do you have any other suggestions?

jfisher01’s picture

Could someone help me with this please? I will really, really appreciate it.

version of PHP in use?
version of ctools in use?
what theme is in use?

jfisher01’s picture

Thank you... I have tried using other themes such as Celju, Energetic, Magazeen and it still gives the same msg. I'm just totally confused. I use godaddy hosting connections to install drupal. I have tried recreating it 3 times using separate database and files but still to no avail.

Sometimes it completely leaves but once I install Panels modual I receive this msg:

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required './sites/all/modules/ctools/includes/plugins.inc' (include_path='.:/usr/local/php5/lib/php') in /home/content/./././..../html/drupalhm/sites/all/modules/ctools/ctools.module on line 84

After about an hour or so the original error msgs pops back up.

What version is being installed by goDaddy? Ultimately you should be installing on your own using drupal native install process to avoid headaches in the future. one click installers like fantastico (provided by hosts) are great for testing scripts but ultimately problematic when trying to run production sites with them.

I have Drupal 6.13 installed through godaddy connections. Per your instructions I installed drupal 6.13 manually and I still have the exact same problem. I'm stumped on this one. I really do appreciate you taking the time out to help me with this.

I think I have the same problem on my one.com server.

I already increased the "php_value memory_limit" in my .htacces file to 32M.

Hopefully someone knows an answer to our problem.

I'd go to the Garland theme and disable all optional modules to see if that makes it go away. Weird stuff.

I have tried everything that I could possibly think of and still I'm getting the exact same error. It's so frustrating because this problem with ctools is holding me back. Do anyone mind helping me further with this?

Placing an issue in the issue queue of the module in question as a support request may be fruitful. Checking the other issues there fore similar reports may also be of benefit, specifically the ones that are already fixed, or closed.

jfisher01’s picture

Thank you so much I will try that now.

Even i faced the same problem....Unzip the downloaded file properly and try again

The same thing happened to me when I tried to upgrade to the Chaos Tools version 6.x-1.0 module, specifically when I enabled Chaos Tools Bulk Export. I created a new folder in the ctools folder, called includes. Then I copied the plugins.inc file from my older ctools version into it. Then I refreshed the modules page. This allowed me to once again view the modules list, so that I could disable Chaos Tools and reinstall the older version.

I just for the first time installed ctools 1.0. I get error mentioned above. Is someone working on this ?

merlinofchaos’s picture

Make sure your untar/unzip program isn't mangling the tarball. For the person who said that ctools 1.0 is missing files, it is not. I downloaded and verified it. As did the 10,000 or so other people that are using it.

The errors are a clear indication that something didn't unzip properly. Make sure the file structure matches. Some tar/zip programs flatten filestructures.

Sure enough, not all the files were unzipping for me. Took a closer look and got the files I needed. All is well now. Thanks for this post.

Thank you,

Izarch doesn't extract all content .... (Why? it's weird)
7zip do it.

I installed ctools 6.x-1.0 and got the same error as described above.
Then I read this discussion and
yes - some files were not present on my 3rd party server
but
yes - they were present in ctools-6.x-1.0.tar.gz

Here is my story:
1) I usually download a module from drupal.org to my PC (running Vista!?!) to "myfolder"
2) I open the Vista file browser, locate the *.tar.gz (ctools-6.x-1.0.tar.gz) file in "myfolder" and 2xclick on it
3) jZip window pops-up and shows me that the ctools-6.x-1.0.tar.gz file contains ctools-6.x-1.0.tar file
Good
4) I click the "Extract" button in the main menu of the jZip window and I can find a new file in "myfolder", the ctools-6.x-1.0.tar file
Exellent !
5) I 2xclick the ctools-6.x-1.0.tar file
6) a new jZip window pops-up and shows me that the ctools-6.x-1.0.tar file contains a ctools folder
7) I click the "Extract" button in the main menu of the jZip window and I can find a new folder in "myfolder", the ctools folder
Perfect !!!
8) I use WS_FTP LE to transfer the ctools folder to my ISP Drupal folder in /sites/all/modules
9) I start my web site, go admin | modules | list, enable "chaos tools" and "Save configuration"
Bum... error... warning: include_once(sites/all/modules/ctools/includes/menu.inc) [function.include-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/...../includes/theme.inc on line 613.
10) first thought - "those guys" did not test this module properly ...
11) second thought - I forgot something ...
12) third thought - I did not read the "read.me" file
...
Who would suspect Microsoft/Vista/jZip that they do not extract all files from ctools-6.x-1.0.tar in step 7) ???
And yes, that was the problem. Although the ctools-6.x-1.0.tar file contains the "ctools" folder with more than 10 sub-folders, the extracted "ctools" folder contains only 3 of them ...

Thank you, merlinofchaos

as mentioned on another node, I had the same missing files problem. Can we think there is also a problem with the .tar.gz file ?

vm’s picture

I don't think so.

I've unarchived them with 7zip and winrar and they both work correctly.

shehudataplus’s picture

Have same problems. Thanks for the long explanation but how to I unzip properly and then upload...properly. Go straight. Thanks anyway

alfthecat’s picture

Wow, I've never seen a post that solves 100.000 problems at once. I see so many of these kinds of errors and on closer inspection, indeed, it was the Vista bug that caused tar.gz file to not completely extract.

Thank you so much!

ftp transferred files directly from godaddy to rackspace. Unfortunately now I am finding many modules cause problems. how many files missing and is it just my module files? stay tuned to find out ...
