This is a fun little project that I stumbled across by accident in looking for some instructions on how to add users to a google map. I sprang for the book and if I was trying to build a social networking site I would spring for the site and then find someone to modify it for me.

Drupal.org itself is more than the social Network you may want.
You need a detailed specification to let us know what you really want.
