Hello

I'm following the instructions on how to 'HowTo: Create a local environment using MAMP': http://drupal.org/node/66187

I've created the database etc. but can't seem to get past the database configuration step for Drupal itself. Every time I hit Save and continue the fields go blank again and I'm still at the same step.

Is this just me or have other people been having the same problem?

Sounds like you made the mistake of "renaming" default.settings.php to settings.php. If this is the case that is not what the instructions state to do. They state to copy default.settings.php to settings.php.

That said, ensure you have a copy of both, default.settings.php AND settings.php in your sites/default folder
If you do, double check the spelling of the file and check to ensure the permissions of the file are 777

I have checked the spelling of both files and they are correct, i'm not sure how to check the permissions of the file - would you mind explaining how to do this?
