there are more than 50K photos on flickr tagged with kitten. that's quite enough that no bot can play trickery.

I'm the "inventor" of the current system and the owner of the linked page... Being lazy and using a BMN account.

I'm working with the feedback from this first wave of input and there's scope to force the bot to do actual image comparisons rather than just MD5 hashes of the downloads... This would make things much tougher to crack...

But this is at no point supposed to be as secure as a proper CAPTCHA. Just a fun and much easier to use replacement.

I'll try and check this thread as often as I can and see how progress is going.

Hi there. Glad to see you stopped by. I just spotted this on digg and thought it would be cool have for Drupal. Nice work!

Regarding the kitten captcha, based on what I know about pattern recognition, comparing photos is much harder than recognizing captcha style text. I seriously believe this is a good idea and it's also funny, and cute. It shouldn't be too hard to implement as a Drupal module either. You can use any kind of photos, even letting the site admin upload a bunch of them and tag them. You can use photos related to the site, say a soccer site has photos of players from all the major leagues et c. I am sure that would be popular.
