the jpeg below is how my FB-style status looks like. i wanna customize it at least to something like wat was shown in ur demo page, which is username, status msg, time edit delete on 1 line, the current i have is taking too much space. maybe a background acolor change as well.
i have tried to play around with the files in ftp but nothing works :(

Background color is theme-related--you need to change the relevant CSS. For fixing the status appearing on multiple lines, see the documentation.

In general, apart from your theme's main CSS file, you should never change any Drupal or module files.
