I'd like to get started with slideshows and having one "attached" to a node is ideal. Your premise assumes I can upload and attach more than one pic to a node. How do I do that?

Just lather, rinse, repeat. The images upload give you one box to browse/attach & upload. But, then you can simply do that again, as many times as you need.
