Looking for good dedicated hosting providers with experience in Drupal

anoopjohn - September 16, 2009 - 20:53

One of the sites that I am working on is currently being hosted on Dreamhost PS. The site gets around 4000 to 8000 visitors every day and there is at least one traffic spike everyday. With every spike the site goes down or throws a lot of page not found errors (when the original PHP request gets killed because of server limitations). This happened even when we kept the memory allocation to the max 2300MB that it supported.

It would be great if somebody could recommend a good managed dedicated hosting service provider or a good high end VPS provider for this kind of traffic.

Thanks
Anoop

I've been very happy with my dedicated server at LiquidWeb, going on 4 years now.

Any opinions on wiredtree?

Can anybody share their experience with wiredtree also?

Wiredtree good

fideaux - November 4, 2009 - 00:34

Inexpensive, loads of control, and they answer the phone. Twitter too.
No major outages in the 6 months I've had them.

I have a bunch of relatively low-volume sites, so I can't testify to how they handle a slashdotting.

1&1 dedicated hosting would

1&1 dedicated hosting would be a good choice. Their VPS, and Shared hosting looks like not so good, but its dedicated service really works pretty well.

1and1 and Dreamhost

anoopjohn - September 21, 2009 - 15:46

Yeah 1and1 shared is not that great. I support a Drupal site on 1and1 shared. I haven't sampled their dedicated/vps though. I also have a customer on Dreamhost shared. Their support is extremely good but the server does not take any kind of traffic loads. But to think of it shared hosting is not expected to take any serious traffic loads though. The VPS on DH buckles at around 8000 visitors per day.

Avoid 1&1, the worst hosting company

Avoid 1&1, the worst hosting company

Hi,

Yes, 1&1 is the worst hosting company I ever tried, but I don't have so much information about their dedicated servers and VPS.

I just hope that MySql databases are not hosted on a shared even when you pay for a VPS or dedicated for your sites or they will block them and even delete them directly in case of spike exactly as they do when you only pay for shared hosting.

Bye.

I have used 1&1 dedicated

seanray - October 6, 2009 - 00:04

I have used 1&1 dedicated server for 8 months, it looks very well. As for dedicated server, 1&1 will not help managing your server, they just make sure the server is accessiable from Internet. This looks very simple job for them, but you have to be with some skills to maintain that server by yourself.

Managed dedicated server ?

wwwoliondorcom - October 6, 2009 - 11:04

Hi,

When a server is not managed by the hosting company what are the tasks that must be done by you ? Updates ?

It is true that managed dedicated are very expensive ?

Thanks.

The thing interesting is

seanray - October 7, 2009 - 02:31

The thing interesting is that, the price of managed server and non-managed server is very close (usually 10%-50% more). In 1&1, those 2 are actually the same. I see some companies, such as GoDaddy, will sell their managed service separately.

The main thing I need to do for my server is to update, install, and configure the package I need for my site. Once I have done with them, I don't see too much thing I need to do in a daily basic.
