First off, thank you for sharing backreference, it's a great module!

I'd like to suggest adding support for content-type specific settings per field. Admins could use the global field setting as a default behavior, and then override that setting per content type.

I have a patch to provide the content-type specific settings, but it needs some work for instances where a global setting is present.

I'll post the patch if there is any interest.
